The timing chain rattle on the VQ engines is the one to have checked rather than lived with, because it points to the tensioner and is far cheaper to sort early. The same goes for a QX60 CVT that has started to hesitate, which is a fluid service caught in time.

Cars usually give warning before they give trouble. Any of these is worth a look rather than a wait:

• A warning light on the dash, including the check engine light, however briefly it appears
• A/C that is cooling less well than it did, or only cools while the car is moving
• A new noise: a knock over bumps, a squeal on braking, a rattle on start-up or a whine that rises with speed
• Juddering or hesitating when you pull away, or a flare in the revs before the car picks up speed
• Temperature creeping up in traffic, or coolant needing topping up
• A puddle or a stain under the car, or a smell of oil, coolant or burning
• Slow or laboured starting, or lights that dim when the engine is idling

We do not publish a single price for a brand, because it would be a guess. What we can tell you is what moves the number:

• Which model you have, and whether it is a turbocharged four, a VQ V6 or a V8
• Whether the fault is one component or a system, which is exactly what diagnosis establishes
• Whether you choose genuine parts or quality aftermarket ones
• How long the labour takes, and whether anything else has been left long enough to cause knock-on damage
